Geriatric Care & Healthy Aging

As we age, we can develop one or more related medical problems often referred to as geriatric syndromes. These usually have more than one cause and may involve various body parts and systems. One geriatric syndrome can contribute to another, which makes medical care more complex. Doctors with training and experience in the care of older adults play an important role in diagnosing and managing geriatric syndromes.

Older adults can have unique health challenges that fall outside the standard American single-disease treatment model. For example, adults over age 65 have a higher risk of falling due to postural problems, balance or gait impairments and the use of multiple prescription medications (polypharmacy) or sedative-hypnotic medications. More than half of older adults have three or more medical problems and may be taking medications for each of them.

Common health problems for aging adults

The most common health issues for older adults include heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and hypertension. Other common older adult conditions include:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Sleep problems
  • Vision problems
  • Hearing problems
  • Malnutrition
  • Bladder incontinence
  • Dementia & delirium
  • Dizziness & fainting
  • Difficulty walking, gait problems & falls
  • Osteoporosis
